  You can buy a gold or silver cleaning kit at various shops/stores.

  A good/safe way to clean gold and diamonds is to soak them in warm or hot water with ammonia added. Soak for 10-15 minutes and then scrub with an old toothbrush. You can search all sorts of home solutions to soak certain jewels in to clean.

  I take mine back to the place I bought it and have them clean it for free. Some jewelry shops don't clean them for you but a lot of recent places have extensive cleaners and they will clean it professionally for you for free.

  Do the magnet test?if it clings to a magnet it's fake

  The ole green test works too - If your skin turns green after wearing it its fake or if you want to test the green test faster, pour nitric acid on the piece and if the liquid turns green then it? a faker.

  If it doesn't have a karat stamp on it (14K, 24K, etc.) then you know its fake and if the stamp is less then 10K then it is not genuine gold.
