Will my car insurance cover me if I am driving someone elses car?

    Post Your Answer

  • rheaboyd

It depends on the owner of the vehicles policy. I would check with them before driving especially if it is something that will be for an extended period of time.

  • relkinvogel

The only 2 instances when you would not be covered is if you are purposely excluded from the owners insurance policy or if you are driving a stolen car.

  • Wenig

I had to find this out in a hard way. They will, if the car owner has given you permission to drive. But if not, they won't and I fell into the second case. A good rule of thumb is that 'insurance follows the vehicle' as far as coverage is concerned. The policy in force on the vehicle involved in a loss will cover the damage to the vehicle itself and whether or not the driver or passengers are covered and to what extent; is all based on the company who insures.

Is it safe to buy a car at an auction?

    Post Your Answer

  • shureth

It is a very good way to save money on a car because you aren't getting the dealer sticker. You bypass that which is nice but you want to make sure that you are still allowed to inspect the car. If you aren't that? a pretty good sign. State cars are always auctioned off (old police cars, repo'd cars) so thats a really good auction to hit up.

  • AbbabA

It's worth it if you are really wanting a used car. Spending a couple thousand dollars is worth buying an auction car but if your spending like 10k+ then its almost more worth it to finance a new or used car from a dealership. Money better certified and you can build up your credit. Check with your insurance company too because some companies don't insure auction cars because of their possible nature.

  • ymassey

Make sure you seriously look at it - see if there is a waranty still because that eases the mind - check check check the car title and history?heard a lot of stories about getting flooded or wrecked cars at auctions - make sure you know who you are dealing with. Make sure the contract states how many days before you get the title. If it takes longer, you can get your money back, because at this point it's breach of contract. I personally would not bid on a vehicle unless the title is there. If they expect you to pay in full, they better have the title.

What are some helpful hints to selling a used car fast?

    Post Your Answer

  • Sasude

Do some of the extra grunt work yourself. Mock up a checklist of what your car has and information on mileage, check ups, etc. I would suggest ordering a car history report so you could tape it to the car for people to read. It's $20 well spent because it assures people that you are a trusted seller.

  • margibrwn34

along the lines of what they posted before me?print up a kelly blue book or edmunds value sheet so that people can see the suggested value of your car. Sometimes they are still listed higher then the value so you can still have a good selling price for you and the customer

  • cauthen02

Pick a busy location to park your car. Check with business managers to see if you may park your car in certain lots first though before you get towed. You can also post listings online if you are willing to pay the fees. Also, keep your car detailed. A cleaner car will sell much faster than a dirty.

  • mickyzx

Will printing out the Kelly Blue Book review for my car help me sell it?

    Post Your Answer

  • Sasude

Yes it will because it lets the customer know exactly what is in the car, what condition it is in, how many miles, etc. It gives a sense of comfort if they know you aren't asking a ridiculous amount for a car and it lets them know what it will be worth if they buy it. The different condition values helps to although most people will always start off at the excellent or good condition price.

  • margibrwn34

There is a flip side to that theory though obviously...it really kind of depends on how much you are wanting to sell it for though. If you are asking for higher then the KBB suggested or private seller rate then it will hurt you in selling your car.

  • cauthen02

Although I have noticed that most car dealerships that post the KBB price only pick the suggested retail price when showing you details because that is generally the highest price listed. The private is what you would get if you sold it yourself and the trade in is what gave someone for the car. Make sure to go online and look for yourself so you can know how much they made on the car (trade in value vs. SRP) so you can know how much haggling room you have. I did this and got my car talked down $5500 when they originally "weren't budging" at $2000. Helps to have an inside edge.

What different types of car auctions are there so I know what I'm getting into?

    Post Your Answer

  • begalez1

Online auto auctions like eBay Motors auto auctions and Yahoo Auctions. Basically private sellers and junk car sales.

  • joestotser

Wholesale auto auctions is generally where dealers buy used cars from other dealers to try and sell on their lots. Public auto actions is everyone for themselves. This goes the same with the cars. Good, bad and ugly but anyone can buy them. Public auctions have the most scam potential though.

  • ottonichols

I trust police, government and insurance company auctions the most. Police and government are high mileage old cruisers or transport cars but at least you know they have been maintained over the years. Insurance and salvage company auctions are usually only open to dealers but sometimes they are public. These are just cars people couldn't afford so it runs the risk of not knowing how they were treated but insurance agencies are going to be at least somewhat honest about it and wouldn't sell a lemon.

What are some tips for getting the most out of a car auction experience?

    Post Your Answer

  • fit2b

Make sure you have enough money in your bank account to cover your check. Many auctions may require a bank draft instead, so be prepared ahead of time. Make sure to run the Vin#'s through

  • fordshaver

Get to the auction early to stock your prey! The earlier the better. Beat the crowds, avoid distractions and look for the cars you'll want. Make sure you have a Kelley Blue Book, NADA guide, or Edmunds book if you're going to a public auto auction. If you're going to a wholesale auto auction, bring a Black Book with you. If you have your PocketPC, just surf to the car pricing web sites from the auction.

  • cpayne01

As you find the cars you like in the lot, open all doors, hood, trunk, and look for the VIN# stickers, and make sure they all match. If they don't the car is either stolen, or was in a wreck, and fixed with parts from another car.

Since gas is at an all time high, what are your options what renting a car?

    Post Your Answer

  • rhetprof

Some companies have you prepay gas but usually it? the market average or higher so that sucks.

  • diablo27

Besides that you normally have to fill up before you return so budget how much you will drive as to how much gas may cost.

  • pnguyen

if you think you won't have enough time to fill the car before returning it, then the pre-paid gas option could be useful. It could also be helpful if you're returning the car to an airport location since gas stations are not allowed to locate by airports due to safety reasons.

What do you need to rent a car?

    Post Your Answer

  • peterwilks

A valid drivers license and a credit card

  • ralewis

If the car is for more then 1 driver you will need written consent from the rental company. Double check their policies too because when it comes to insurance coverage and or authorization of who can drive may vary per company policy and you don't want to run into this problem too late.

  • Ramirez75

Half of deciding what you need is deciding what you want. Sedan or SUV? How many passagers will you have? Any luggage? Terrain/area in which you'll be driving. ..GPS or no GPS - Its better to have an idea of what you want and how much your willing to spend because you can book a reservation but your exact car might not be decided until you get there.

How old do you have to be to rent a car?

  • coramsey

Some places allow 18-24 year olds to rent at a higher rate.

  • Hcorash

Even some cars you can't drive if you are over 25. For example you can't drive an Audi TT from Hertz unless you are 30 years or older. Crazy right?!
